Alleppey or Allappuzha is the oldest planned town in the district of Allappuzha. It is also the sixth largest city in the state of Kerala and is well known for its tourism, mostly for the backwater, beaches and the coir industry. It has an urban population of 177, 029 and being an important tourist centre; the city has contributed immensely in the growth of Kerala tourism. It is also known by the name Venice of the East.
